Trump Escapes in the Catering Truck

Donald Trump has spent years constructing the image of a man so fearless that danger itself supposedly asks permission before approaching him.

Then Iran apparently threatened Air Force One, and the Leader of the Free World disappeared into the catering department.

Imagine the scene.

“Mr. President, we have a serious security threat.”

“Get the Beast!”

“Too obvious.”

“Marine One?”

“Too visible.”

“What do we have?”

“Sir… we have the catering truck.”

And thus began Operation Chicken Surprise.

But the stranger part concerns everybody who did not get the presidential catering-truck upgrade.

Air Force One departed separately, carrying senior administration officials, White House personnel, and the traveling press corps. Rubio and Bessent were reportedly among those aboard, while Scavino, Harp, and Nauta made the secret transfer with Trump. (Reuters)

Officials reportedly believed the concealment served Trump’s security interests, and available reporting does not establish that anyone deliberately decided to expose the other passengers to an attack. Still, the optics are extraordinary. (Reuters)

Nothing summarizes Trump’s world quite like the possibility of discovering your position in the presidential hierarchy by whether someone whispers:

“Get in the food truck.”

Secretary of State and Treasury Secretary? Enjoy the flight.

Natalie Harp? Somebody make room beside the Caesar salad.

The episode unintentionally provides a wonderful diagram of Trump’s personal hierarchy government. There are cabinet officers with impressive titles, Senate confirmations, and enormous responsibilities.

And then there are the people Trump actually wants to stand beside him when the catering truck is being used.

Trump later emphasized that he was not frightened and said the Secret Service and military wanted the aircraft switch. (AP News)

Of course, he wasn’t frightened.

He was merely conducting an extremely confidential inspection of airport cuisine while traveling rapidly away from a threat.

History gave us Roosevelt’s fireside chats.

Kennedy gave us the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Trump has now contributed something uniquely his own:

The Presidential Emergency Buffet.
